The Blanket Blog

Happy Anniversary to the Joan Schick Blanket Project!

heart

We are all familiar with the cliche that time flies. Six years ago, when I started the blanket project in June 2009,  “Happy Anniversary!” I had no concrete  vision of how I wanted the project to develop.  I only knew that a blanket project in memory of my mom, Joan Schick , was something I was driven to create. And now, 6 years later, with over 500 blankets delivered to the babies at Saint Peter’s University Hospital NICU,  we are recently incorporated as a non profit.  Our 8 board members met last month and exchanged many great ideas about ways to continue to flourish and be successful. This blog will be my way of updating you about blanket donations, show pictures, tell some stories about my mom, highlight a board member, share blanket patterns and more. I also look forward to informing you about a new, exciting direction the project has taken since its inception: we are reaching out to agencies like Girl Scouts, retirement homes, assisted living facilities, senior centers and more to find people who would like to knit or crochet blankets and if needed, we will supply yarn and other materials like knitting needles and crochet hooks. The notion ( hah! a handiwork pun 🙂 ) is that not only will the babies be on the receiving end, but it could make some people feel great by being able to make a contribution!

Please feel free to send any ideas you may have or ask any questions about the project. And stay tuned to see some pictures from our first event where a New Brunswick Senior Citizen gave of her time and talent to teach New Brunswick Girls Scouts how to crochet, a skill they now have for the rest of their lives!
